Construction of the Ahmanson theatre which commenced on the 9th of March, 1962 was facilitated by a donation that was given by H.F. Ahmanson & Co. founder Howard F. Ahmanson, Sr. The naming was done for his second wife who was a businesswoman and a philanthropist. On the 12th of April, 1967, the inaugural event of the theatre was held with a production of Man of La Mancha that was sponsored by the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Association. The show featured Joan Diener and Richard Kiley. The United States premiere of More Stately Mansions was also held in the theatre on the 12th of September the same year. Following its opening, the Ahmanson Theatre has hosted quite a number of prominent events that include comedies, dramas, musicals and classics’ revivals.

Broadway productions such as The Most Happy Fella, The Drowsy Chaperone, Smokey Joe’s Café and Amadeus all have the Ahmanson in the capacity of co-producer. On the entire West Coast, the Ahmanson still leads on the largest subscription of theatrical season-tickets. Early fall marks the beginning of the year – round season of the theatre which lasts through to late summer.

In the 1990s, renovations on the Ahmanson Theatre started in order to restore its former glory and bring it back to its elegant attractive condition. It went through a major renovation that cost about $17 million and brought considerable changes to the theatre. Some of the notable changes brought about by the renovation include the balcony and mezzanine that were moved closer to the stage than they were initially. The width of the auditorium was also reduced during the process and the ceiling lowered. The acoustics of the Ahmanson theatre received a major improvement from the renovations too.

Prior to the 90s renovations, the theatre had a sitting capacity of 1,600 for intimate plays. This was however reconfigured during the renovations to a new sitting capacity of 2,084. It took 18 months to renovate the theatre to completion with the design work being done by Ellerbe Becket Architects and the constructions being done by Robert F. Mahoney & Associates. After the completion of the renovation, the Ahmanson Theatre was reopened on the 25th January, 1995 with a run of Miss Saigon that extended 8 and a half months.
